STUDENT GUIDE
Dear Students and Parents:
This Physical Education
Student Guide is designed to acquaint you with our Physical Education program
and answer questions you may have.
Please read it carefully, sign the tear-off section, and return it to
the Physical Education teacher tomorrow.
Should you wish further information, please contact the teacher.
I. GENERAL POLICIES
A. The Physical Education teachers are available to help
guide and assist you in your learning experiences. Please don’t hesitate to ask for their
assistance.
B.
Misconduct or profanity will not be tolerated.
C.
Appropriate behavior, attitude, and effort in following class and school rules
are expected at all times.
D. Proper
respect and courtesy to others is expected at all times.
E. Cell
phones, i-pod-type music devices, gum, candy, food, or drinks are not allowed
in class.
F.
Students damaging or defacing Physical Education equipment or facilities will
be held financially responsible and
appropriate consequences will be assigned.
G.
Students are not allowed in the Physical Education offices without the
permission of a teacher. If you wish to speak with a teacher, knock on
the door, look through the window, and wait to be motioned into the office by a teacher.
II. DISCIPLINE
A. In
order to guarantee all students in our classes the excellent learning
environment they deserve,
the Department of Physical Education is utilizing the following Discipline
Plan.
1.
Philosophy of Discipline
a. We believe all students can behave appropriately in our
classes. We will not tolerate any student stopping us
from teaching, or any student from learning, because
of a student’s inappropriate behavior.
2.
Class Rules
a. Students will be appropriately dressed for class each day unless
excused by a parent’s or doctor’s note given
to the Physical Education teacher.
b. Students will give a good effort to do well and will follow the
Physical Education Student Guide
regulations.
c. Students will follow the teacher’s directions the first time
they are given.
d. Students will be courteous and respectful to others.
e. Students will not use profane language.
3.
If a Student Chooses to Break a Rule
a. 1st
Consequence: The teacher will give the student a verbal warning about the
inappropriate behavior.
b. 2nd Consequence: The student will be assigned
15 minutes of Lunch Detention
and/or be placed on the appropriate Lunch
Detention Contract Step.
c. NOTE: All warnings and consequences are canceled at the
end of each class.

d. Severe Disruption Clause:
If a student’s behavior severely disrupts the class, is defiant,
disrespectful, or argumentative, the student will be suspended from
class immediately and sent to an Assistant Principal’s Office. An Assistant Principal
will deal with the inappropriate behavior and consequences. Parents/Guardians
will be contacted to discuss the incident, suspension from class,
and possible future consequences should this behavior occur again.
e. A Lunch Detention Contact
may also be used by the teacher as part of the
Discipline Plan for non-dresses, unacceptable behavior, walking warm-up laps
and/or running track tests. 4.
If a Student Chooses to Follow the
Rules
a. Positive Consequences
1. The student will receive a higher
grade in class.
2. The student will receive positive
complimentary comment codes on progress report cards.
3. The student will be provided a
better learning environment.
III. GRADING
A.
Students must pass a minimum of four semesters of Physical Education
courses in order to graduate.
B. A student’s grade will be determined by
the following criteria:
1. 50% of a student’s grade
will be determined by successful DAILY PARTICIPATION IN CLASS ACTIVITIES
(including running assignments).
a. 10 points will be earned each day the student dresses and
successfully participates in class
activities.
1. Points will be deducted from a
student’s daily participation grade for the following infractions:
a. Tardy = minus 2 points
b.
Partial Non-Dress (not wearing a P.E.
uniform shirt, shorts, or socks
= minus 2 points
c. Unexcused Non-Dress = minus 10
points
d.
Excused Non-Dress = minus 5 points
e. Class Cut or Truancy = minus 10
points
f.
Unexcused Absence = minus 10 points
g. Excused Absence = minus 5 points
h. Unacceptable Behavior = minus 5
points
i. Not running warm-up laps or track tests
= minus 3 points
j. Not
having paper and pencil for assigned non-dress report =
minus 3 points
k. Not
having a shuttlecock or tennis ball for those classes = minus 3 points
l. Not reporting for a 2nd roll
call at the end of the period = minus 10 points
b. NOTE: Students will
be placed on the Lunch Detention
Contract for unexcused
non-dresses, not running laps, or unacceptable behavior.
2. 25% of a student’s grade will be
determined by WRITTEN TESTS, QUIZZES, and WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS.

3. 10% of a student’s grade will be
determined by PHYSICAL FITNESS TESTS, PHYSICAL FITNESS ACTIVITIES, SKILLS
TESTS, and CLASS ACTIVTIY TESTS.
a. This segment of the student’s grade will include natural ability, improvement of class activity skills, skills tests, and Physical Fitness Tests and activities.
4. 15% of a student’s grade will be determined by the RUNNING OF WARM-UP LAPS and RUNNING TESTS AROUND THE STADIUM TRACK.
E. Dishonesty or Cheating
1. A student who gains, or attempts to gain,
an unfair advantage over other students by dishonesty
or cheating, will be subject to one or more of the following consequences:
a. The teacher and student will have a conference to discuss the
incident and possible consequences.
b. 8 points will be deducted from the student’s grade.
c. The student will receive a “Fail” on the assignment.
d. The teacher, counselor, or assistant principal will contact the parents/guardians to discuss the
incident and consequences.
F. A student’s grade may be improved in the
following manner:
1.
If the student has had points deducted, 5 points will be added to a student’s
grade when the
student successfully participates in class activities for every 5 consecutive
days without
having any points deducted.
G. Report
Card Grades will be determined by the following grading scale:
1. A = 100 to 94%
A- = 93 to 90%
B+ = 89
to 87%
B = 86 to 84%
B- = 83 to 80%
C+ = 79
to 77%
C = 76 to 74%
C- = 73 to 70%
D+ = 69 to 67%
D = 66 to 64%
D- = 63
to 60%
F = 59% and below
IV. PHYSICAL EDUCATION SCHOOL UNIFORM AND DRESS
REGULATIONS
A. All
students are expected to wear the Official Physical Education School Uniform
which can be purchased only at Canyon’s
Associated Student Body (ASB) Student Store on campus.
1.
Monetary discounts on the uniform are given to students who purchase an ASB
Card.
2.
This official uniform will be used by the student to fulfill his/her minimum
graduation requirements
of two years of Physical Education classes.
B. All
students must wear athletic gym shoes and white athletic socks.
C. Shorts,
shirt, sweat pants, sweat shirts, and shoes should be marked with the student’s
name.
D.
Uniforms should be taken home and washed at the end each week.
E.
Students are not to lend or borrow uniforms.

F. Non-dressed
students are not allowed to participate in class activities.
1. Non-dressed students may be given a
written Physical Education report to be done during
class time.
2.
Non-dressed students will be seated next to the class.
3.
Non-dressed students must report for a second roll call at the end of the
period at a teacher-designated
area.
G. Cold
weather clothing.
1. During cold weather, students in classes
meeting outdoors may wear sweat shirts and sweat
pants over their shorts and shirt.
H.
Watches, rings, or jewelry should not
be worn to class as they may be damaged, broken, or lost during class activities.
1.
Valuables may be checked with a teacher in the Physical Education Office before
class.
I. NOTE:
If there are “special circumstances” regarding appropriate clothing, parents
should contact the
teacher. If students have outgrown their
uniforms, a plain colored T-shirt without pictures
or writing on it and shorts will be considered an acceptable uniform.
V. LOCKS AND LOCKERS
A. Each 9th
grade student should purchase a combination lock at the ASB Student Store.
1.
Monetary discounts on Physical Education locks are given to students who
purchase an ASB
Card.
2. Physical Education teachers will
be able to use their master keys to open school locks in cases of emergency instead of
cutting a lock off.
B. Each 10th,
11th, or 12th grade student should use the lock they
purchased as 9th graders.
C. Do not
tell your combination to anyone.
D. Do not
share your lock or locker with anyone.
E.
Double-check your lock to be sure that it is securely locked each time you
close it.
F.
Students losing a lock should check in the Physical Education Office to see if
it has been turned-in.
G.
Students losing a lock should bur another lock at the ASB Student Store and
give the new combination to
their teacher.
H. Do not
keep valuables, large sums of money, or glass containers in your locker.
VI. NON-DRESS AND MEDICAL EXCUSES
A. A
parent’s or guardian’s dated note, with telephone number, given to the Physical
Education teacher will excuse a
student from dressing and participating for that day.
1. If a student becomes ill at
school, or forgets to bring a parent’s note, the note must be brought the
following school day or 10 points will be deducted from the student’s grade for
that day.
B. After
being excused for three consecutive days by a parent’s note, a physician’s note
must be given to the Physical Education
teacher. The original note will be filed
in the Health Office and
copies will be given to the
teacher and student’s counselor.
C. If a
student is to be medically excused for less than four weeks, the student will
be assigned a daily Physical
Education written assignment to be done during the class to maintain his/her
grade.
D. If a
student is to be medically excused for more than four weeks in a grading
quarter, the student will be
given a program change to P.E. Student Service for that period.
VII. ABSENCES AND TARDIES
A. Good
attendance is directly related to a student’s success in class. Upon the return to class after an absence or tardy, proper
Attendance Office procedures must have been followed or the absence or tardy will be considered uncleared and
the student will be assigned appropriate consequences by the teacher and/or the Assistant Principal. The student’s grade will be lowered by
excessive absences and/or
tardies.

B. The SCHOOL ATTENDANCE PLAN CONTRACT for excessive
absences is in effect regarding course credit.
The SCHOOL ATTENDANCE POLICY states that if a student is
absent fifteen (15) or more days from a class during the semester, the student
will receive a Fail grade and zero (0) credits for the course. An Appeals Procedure is also a part of the School
Attendance Policy.
C. CLASS
TRUANCY/CUT POLICY
1. 1ST Truancy/cut: The teacher will contact
parents/guardians. Lunch Detention will
be assigned by the
teacher.
2.
Each Truancy/Cut thereafter: The teacher
will contact parents/guardians, Assistant Principal,
and Counselor. The Assistant Principal
will assign 4 hours of
D. TARDY
POLICY
1.
Students are to be in roll call order at the teacher-designated area 5 minutes
after the start
of the period or they will be marked Tardy when the teacher starts taking roll
call.
a. After 3 tardies and parent/guardian contact, the teacher will
assign 15 minutes of
Lunch Detention to the student.
b. After 5 tardies and parent/guardian contact, the Assistant
Principal will assign 4
hours of
c. After 8 tardies and parent/guardian contact, Detention will be
assigned and
reassigned for every increment of 3 tardies in the future.
A. All injuries or accidents, regardless of how minor, must be reported to the teacher immediately. B. Students are not to administer first aid to others or to themselves. Notify a teacher.
IX. LOCKER ROOM AND GYMNASIUM REGULATIONS
A.
Students are not allowed in the locker rooms or gymnasiums without teacher
supervision.
X. SHOWER PROCEDURES
A. Showers
are available.
B.
Students must provide their own towel.
XI. LOST AND FOUND
A. Lost
and Found items will be brought to the P.E. Offices and after one day, taken to
the Attendance Office or
Textbook Room.
