CLASS DESCRIPTION
Spanish 2AB is a one-year course with the intent of continuing= the study of the language. Both semesters focus on communicating in Spanish, as well as listening and writi= ng in Spanish. The acquisition of practical vocabulary and grammatical structures will be key to these goals. In addition, we will be learning different aspects of the Hispanic culture.

MATERIALS NEEDED IN CLASS &= nbsp;

We will be using the book Paso a Paso 2 (replacement co= st $70), the Practice Workbook (replacement cost $10) and the Writin= g, Audio & Video Activities workbook ($10) that can be purchased at the ASB office. You will need to = bring your book, your workbook, a binder with plenty of paper and three dividers,= and pens (black or blue and a red one for correcting) to class every day.<= /o:p>

RULES

*Adherence to these rules will insure a proper lear= ning environment that is safe and effective for every student. It is in everyone’s interest= to uphold them. Thank you in advance.

1. Come prepared for class. Bring your own textbook and workbo= ok every day!

2. Respect each other’s views a= nd opinions.

Do not talk whil= e the teacher or a fellow classmate is talking.

5.= Come to class on time and participate during class.

6.= No food, candy or drinks (water is ok) are permitted in class.<= /o:p>

7.= No headphones or audio equipment may be brought into the classroom.

8.= Cell phones must be turned off before entering the classroom.

* Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. A student who cheats will receive = a 0 for that assignment, a U for cooperation, a step and his or her parents wil= l be notified.

The step system (as described in the parent handbook) will be = used to enforce these rules during class.

Also, fifty standards (to be done at home) may be assigned if = any rule is broken. They will be written in Spanish. If the standards are not completed accurately and turned in on the following day, they will be doubled. If the standards are still not com= pleted on the second day, a fifteen-minute after school detention will be assigned. If they are still n= ot completed on the third day, or if the student fails to report for detention, Saturday school will be assigned.

GRADING POLICY

The student’s grade will depend on the total points earn= ed divided by the total possible points. A letter will be assigned based on the following percentage scale.

= &nb= sp; = &nb= sp; = 70-79=3DC

= &nb= sp; = &nb= sp; = 60-69=3DD

Quizzes and tests – Students will be taking written tests and quizzes. Quizzes will be announced and unannounced. There will be tw= o to six quizzes per chapter. Quiz= zes are worth 10-40 points each and account for about 30%* of the overall grade= .

Tests will always be announced and will cover materi= al presented in class. They cover the entire chapter and are worth 80-100 points each and are worth abo= ut 32%* of the overall grade. Th= ere will be five tests within the course of the semester.

If a student is absent on the day of a test and the absence is excused, the student must make up the test the day of the student’s return. If the student is absent more than= one day, the length of the absence shall determine at which point the student s= hall make it up. If the absence is unexcused, the student will automatically receive a zero (0) for that quiz/test.

The written portions of both can be made up during class or after school. The listening portion can be made = up during brunch, lunch or after school at the teacher’s convenience.=

Due to the number of tests and quizzes given, no quiz or test shall be dropped.= The final exam is cumulative is wo= rth about 200 points, about 13%* of the overall grade

Homework and Class Assignments – Homework will be assigned on a daily basis. An= y work that is not completed in class may be assigned in addition to homework. Homework and class assignments wil= l be checked (not collected) daily and assigned a point value based on completio= n. Each assignment is worth 5 points, and the total homework points account for about 18%* of the fi= nal grade. Students will c= orrect their own work with the rest of the class.= NOTE: The only way to obtain credit is t= o do the full assignment. If one sentence (one vocabulary word) is missing, the assignment is not complete a= nd credit may not be given. I= do not accept late homework or class work.

If a student mis= ses an assignment due to an excused absence, it is the student’s responsibil= ity to find out what the assignment is and show it to the teacher. Students will be given the number = of days absent to turn in assignments.

Warm Ups (calentamientos)- There will be a warm up activity on t= he board every day. As students = come in to class they should sit down and start on the warm up immediately. The warm ups should be kept = in a separate section of the binder. Each warm up should be titled with the day’s date. They will be useful as a study guide. If a student is absent= it is his or her responsibility to get the questions or directions for missing wa= rm ups.

Notes (apuntes)- There should also be a section in the binder= for notes. As with the warm ups, students must take notes each day and date them. Ten to fifteen minutes sho= uld be spent each evening reviewing notes and warm ups completed that day/week = in class.

Listening and oral assignments - These assignments will be done during class. Make up wo= rk for excused absences will be given outside of the classroom hours (during brunc= h or lunch). The number of days ab= sent shall determine when the student makes up the assignments.

Projects- There will be a project assigned for some or all of the chapters that we complete. Th= ey will be worth 25 to 50 points depending on the project. They will account for between 5 an= d 10%of the total grade.

Remember it is the student’s responsibility to find out = what assignment or test he/she needs to make up. The student will need to contact me before or after class or during brunch or lunch.

Extra Credit will be offered to = students with a 70% or better toward the end of the semester.<= /p>
