Course Description

Romeo and Juliet

Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to second semester! We hope this semester at Golden Valley High School will be successful. The English Department hopes to encourage each and every student to participate in class and produce creative and accomplished projects and assignments. Following are a few rules and procedures that should make this semester go smoothly.

Parents, please take time to read carefully the following information over with your student. We know that you have received many papers to read, but each and every item on this letter is important for your student’s success this semester.

Rules of Conduct: Learning is of prime importance in class. Therefore, we believe that the first and most important rule of behavior is courtesy to all people. Furthermore, high school students, as young adults, have reached a level of maturity that requires them to accept full responsibility for their conduct and treatment/interaction with peers and instructors. To maximize the learning opportunities for all students, all the English teachers have the following expectations:

Supplies: In addition to the normal school supplies, students will need:

A composition notebook of 100 pages

lined paper

Black, blue, green and red pens for class. (All 4 colors.)

highlighters

Colored markers or pencils (no sharpies!)

Optional:

scotch tape or glue pen

Optional:

These supplies need to be in class each and every day.

Curriculum: Our 9 th Grade curriculum follows the District English Department Leadership Team’s core curriculum guidelines. Second semester will focus on poetry and fiction. All students will read The Odyssey by Homer, Romeo and Julietby Shakespeare, and Of Mice and Men by Steinbeck. There will be two common projects given: The Odyssey Travel Brochure and a research project on Shakespeare. Additional curriculum includes out-of-class writing: narrative/biography, literary analysis, expository essay, and a research-based project. There will be grammar assignments.
