NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR - Mary Purdy

Dear Parent

Many benefits will come from this experience. The choral music program offers something for everyone. Music is one of the “multiple intelligences” that contribute to the development of each person. Choral music, as all of the arts, encourages the student to express his/her emotions in a positive way. No other field does that in the manner the arts can. Through music, the heart is touched; the soul is fed. In addition, the student learns teamwork and self-discipline through the many performances in which he/she participates. Self-confidence is enhanced through choral music. Performing on stage helps even the shyest student build self-esteem. A familial atmosphere is part of the choral experience. At a large high school, having a place to feel at home can help many students cope. These are ideas that will help them through life, not just high school.

In this handbook, you will find course outlines for each of the choral groups. In addition, the choral calendar is included in its first draft (dates will be added for festivals and other community performances), information about choral awards, officers, the choral contract, behavior policies and booster club information. Please read the handbook, sign the signature page at the end and return as soon as possible. In addition, please write all pertinent information on the "Activity Clearance Card", sign it, and return at the same time. Added to those two pieces of paper, please sign the “Choral Music Contract” after you have read it! Welcome to the choral music experience! I look forward to working with you and your child. I hope many of you will become supporters through our patron program and through our booster club. If you ever have any questions, please don't hesitate to call me at school or send an e-mail. My extension is 445 and my e-mail address is mpurdy@hartdistrict.org

Have a wonderful year! I hope to see you at all of the concerts and choral events!

Sincerely,
Mary Purdy,
Choral Director
