Extra Credit

Fall Semester

 English 10A Mrs. Barcellos

Please note: Extra credit is to help with low test scores or forgotten homework. It is not to take the place of assignments you don't want to do. Therefore, you will not recieve extra if you are missing one of your two book chats or any assigned paper.

You may choose two extra credit projects from this list.   The amount of credit earned depends on how well you do the assignment.

1. Illustrate one of the literary terms discussed in class suc as protagonist, foreshadowing.   Please be sure that you are doing a term that is needed for tenth grade. Illustration should be done on an 8 x 11 sheet of white paper—not lined paper.   You may do no more than two.   10 points each.

2. After the Emmys last year, Oprah Winfrey said “Television connects us.”   Choose a television show that you watch and write a review.   Consider:   who is the audience of this show?   What types of themes are presented in each episode?   What values does it have?   Would you recommend it?   (possible75 points)

3. Write a sports article on a VHS sports event.   This article should be an evaluation of the event.   Details of the event should include players’ names and actions.   Review should not resemble any Signal articles.    (possible 50 points if organizers are also turned in)

4. Choose a current event and read about it.   Write a summary of the event in your own words, telling why it is important.   Please staple articles to your summary.   (30 points)

5.Choose two teams in the same sport (football, soccer, basketball).   Compare and contrast the two teams.   Remember this is also an evaluation.   One team should be better than the other.   (possible 55 points if organizers are also turned in)

6. Choose a product that you use.   Find a similar product by a different manufacturer.   Compare the two products.   Consider how they are alike.   How they are different.   Write a compare and contrast essay that evaluates the two products.   Which one do you recommend?   (possible 50 points if organizers are also turned in)

7.Think of a problem on campus:   not enough people recycling; too much trash left on the ground; poor attendance at some sports event.   You can find your own topic.   You know more than I do.   Write a persuasive essay in which you convince your fellow students to take action.   (possible 60 points if organizers are also turned in)  

8.Think about the topics you have studied in Mod Civ this semester.   Choose an event.   Write an essay that shows the causes and effects of this event.   (possible 55 points if organizers are also turned in)

Remember the state standard for tenth grade essays is 1,000-1, 500 words.   Turn essays into Turnitin.com as well as bring a copy to class. Turnitin assignments are labeled: extra credit 1 and extra credit 2.

9. Make a video of one chapter of LOTF (or a story read in class). 75 points (more possible)

10. Do a third book chat. 75 points
