This is a one-year course designed to introduce basic Spanish skills to the students. Students will be listening, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish. Also Spanish and Latin American histories and cultures will be studied.
Using the textbook Navegando and other teacher-selected materials, emphasis is placed on listening, speaking, reading and writing Spanish. Grammatical concepts to be covered will include the following:
The textbook for this course is Navegando augmented by teacher-selected materials. The replacement cost is $70.00. Each student is responsible for covering books and taking care of them. Lost or damaged books must be replaced or paid for by the student. The workbook for this course will be provided to each student free of charge. It is the student’s responsibility to replace lost or damaged practice workbook by placing an order at http://www.emcp.com/product_catalog/ under ISBN 978-0-82192-801-1.
*Each student needs to bring the textbook and workbook to class everyday.
Homework assignments will be given on a regular basis (3-5 times per week).
Homework assignments are to be done neatly and turned in the next day. It will be corrected, stamped by the teacher and assigned credit points on the day is due. Late work will NOT be accepted. Homework not completed due to an excused absent must be made up within a two day period after returning to class.
Homework must be completed before class according to the following format:
A student is allowed to take the make-up test only if the student is absent the day of the test and the absence is excused. A student must take the test the day he returns to class. If a student is absent several days, the student has the same amount of days to take the make-up test after his/her return. The tests will count double. For example if the test is 80 questions, it will be worth 160 points. There are no retakes on tests or quizzes.
No make-up work or tests will be allowed for truant, cut or uncleared absences.
You will earn five (5) points of participation a week. They will be added to the grade at the end of each grading period. You can lose one or all five points at any time if you are not actively participating in class. Actively participating in class means you are doing what you are supposed to be doing. For example: talking, eating, being tardy, not bringing materials, using cell phones, listening to music or using any other device in class will make you lose those participation points. Once the five points are lost, the five step form will be used for the rest of the week if needed. You will not be informed when you are losing points. Just know that if you are not actively participating, you will lose the points.

No cellular phones, audio or visual equipment in the classroom. Turn off and put away your Ipod and cell phones. If I see it, you are using it! The William S. Hart Union High School District cell phone policy will be implemented. (You may refer to it in the Student/Parent Handbook & Calendar on page 11.)
