Welcome To Valencia High School Sports Medicine

The Valencia High School Sports Medicine program is currently the only program of its kind in the William S. Hart School District. Valencia Sports Med has partnered with Southern California Orthopedic Institute (SCOI); Vargo Physical Therapy; Dr. Allan Smudde DDS, Aesthetic Dentistry of Valencia, DDS; Sarah Erhsam, ATC, and Chad Peters, ATC, at COC; and Dr. Dwang Jang (DJ) of So Cal Physical Therapy, Inc.  Our partners have allowed the Sports Med students access to their facilities for observation and additional training. DJ visits our classroom two days a week to treat our athletes and work with the Sports Med students. Students who graduate from VHS having taken all three Sports Med classes—Sports Med A, B and Advance Sports Med—graduate from VHS with a Career Path emphasis. The students who graduate with the Career Path emphasis from Sports Med and then attend COC have already satisfied the introductory athletic training class and are able to start work in the second level class in Athletic Training.

The Sports Med students are the work force of this program. Our “Black Shirts” are the rookie student athletic trainers who are learning to apply their textbook knowledge, while the “Purple Shirts,” the lead student athletic trainers, work with most of the varsity sports on campus as well as some lower levels throughout the year. The students enrolled in Advance Sports Med are required to perform 100 hours of service for each semester they are in the program.  These hours include working with a sports team or working in the Sports Med classroom after school.  Promoting the health and safety of all student athletes on campus and those visiting Valencia High School is the primary focus of Valencia High School’s Sports Medicine Program.
