They are supposed to have a tutorial form completed within the first few minutes of class. Students who are choosing to do a group tutorial gather at the front board all together. The goal is to help the presenter problem solve by offering input and asking them questions. Also it is good for students with more urgent questions to go first. If they are choosing independent study, they need to work quietly without talking, at their own desks. They need to complete their summary at the end of the period.

Reviewed "Amazing Grace" movie and shared issues we're dealing with in school
Tutorial groups and independent study
Wednesday-Monday, October 14-19, 2009
Wednesday we went over Learning Logs, which are ways to take record of what you did in class when you were unable to take notes for some reason.
On the left column go the questiosn: what did you do in class today? what did you learn? What is important about the material covered? what questions do you still have about what you learned?
On the bottom margin write a comment or two about the class period/activity.
We also went over Textbook surveys -- when you have nothing to take notes on due to a test or project, preview the next section of the textbook -- on your paper describe pictures, write captions, write headings, write bold words, write a few of the textbook provided review questions, then write your own questions you would like answered as you read this section of the textbook. We practiced doing this in one of our textbooks.
On Thursday & Monday we finished watching Amazing Grace and taking focused notes on the problem, causes and solution, preparing to write our letter from Wilberforce
On Friday we had free time

Bellwork: What do you KNOW about the SAT and PSAT? The ACT and PLAN? What Questions do you have about them?
SAT notes: Nearly every college in America accepts the SAT or SAT Subject Tests. More than two million students take the SAT every year.
The SAT Reasoning Test is a test for college admissions in the US. The SAT is published by the College Board. The current SAT Reasoning Test takes three hours and forty-five minutes and costs $45. Possible scores range from 600 to 2400 combining test results from three 800-point sections -- math, critical reading, and writing. Most of the questions on the SAT, except for the essay and the grid-in math responses, are multiple choice; all multiple-choice questions have five answer choices.
SAT assesses how well test takers analyze and solve problems—skills they learned in school that they will need in college. The SAT is typically taken by juniors and seniors. The SAT in combination with high school grade point average (GPA) provides a better indicator of success in college than high school grades alone, as measured by college freshman GPA.
SAT is administered seven times a year in the U.S. The test contains 3 hours and 45 minutes of actual timed sections, although most administrations, including orientation, distribution of materials, completion of biographical sections, and eleven minutes of timed breaks, run about four and a half hours long.
The questions range from easy, medium, and hard. Easier questions typically appear closer to the beginning of the section while harder questions are towards the end in certain sections. This is not true for every section but it is the rule of thumb mainly for math and sentence completions and vocabulary.
SAT Bingo: Find someone who can write in the correct information for each box and then sign his or her name. Complete all items. When you fill up ALL spaces on your paper, yell “bingo” and receive your prize

We will then conduct the first activity of a group meeting, positive statements, and then I will share the group meeting concept.

You will be split into groups (like in tutorials) that will meet at each segment of the room.
You will circle up (on top of desks or on the floor or by moving desks).
Each group will receive “ungame” cards and will take turns picking and reading the card. The reader is the one to answer the question on the card, and the group will listen. At the end of class you will need to remember at least 3 of your group members’ responses.

NOTES:
The Cornell Notetaking System
One of you should take notes on an overhead transparency to show an example of how notes can be taken.
We will critique your notes, so no shy note-takers! Be ready to take criticism!
Cornell Notetaking: What Cornell method is meant to be
The Cornell method provides a systematic format for condensing and organizing notes.
Meant to be easily used as a test study guide.
Meant to help students process information a minimum of 5 times.
Writing is a great tool for learning!
Cornell notetaking stimulates critical thinking skills.
Cornell notes has been adopted by most major law schools as the preferred method of taking notes!
Stop, turn to your neighbor, and share ONE thing so far from this lecture.
Cornell Notetaking: Pros and Cons
Notes can be taken from any source: lecture, textbooks, video, etc.
97% of people who actually write notes instead of printing them out are more likely to remember them.
Unfortunately, it is often the case that while students are busy taking notes, they do not pay sufficient attention to what the professor is actually saying or explaining.
The flip side of this is that notetaking makes learning "active learning" as opposed to "passive learning." When students have nothing to do but listen to the lecture, it is difficult for them to stay alert and attentive all of the time.
Stop, turn to your neighbor, and share ONE thing you remember from the last slide.
Cornell Notetaking: Advantages & Materials
The Cornell method provides a systematic format for condensing and organizing notes.
Three Advantages:
It is a method for mastering information, not just recording facts.
It is efficient.
Each step prepares the way for the next part of the learning process.
Materials:
Loose-leaf paper in binder
2 ½ inch column drawn at the left-hand edge of each paper, used for questions
3-4 lines on bottom of page for summary
Stop, STAND UP!
Turn to your neighbor, and share ONE ADVANTAGE you remember about Cornell Notes
Cornell Notetaking: Recording notes
Record notes during class on the right:
Record notes in paragraphs, skipping lines to separate information logically.
Don’t force an outlining system, but do use obvious numbering
Strive to get main ideas down. Facts, details, and examples are important, but they’re meaningful only with concepts.
Use abbreviations for extra writing and listening time.
Use graphic organizers and pictures when they’re helpful.
Stop, turn to your neighbor, and share ONE thing you remember from the last slide about recording notes during class.
Cornell Notetaking: Refining Notes
After Class, refine notes:
Write questions in the left column about the information on the right.
Check for incomplete items:
Loose dates, terms, names
Notes that are too brief to recall months later
Read the notes and underline/ highlight key words and phrases. Use color!
Read underlined words and write in recall clues in the left-hand column (key words and very brief phrases will trigger ideas/facts on the right). These are in addition to the questions.
Stop, turn to your neighbor, and share ONE thing you remember from the last slide about refining notes after class.

ATTENTION SOPHOMORES!
This fall, you are required to attend ONE* of the college presentations hosted by the VHS Career Center, and you will need to sign up on the AVID class list.
