Cornell Notes:

Topic: Cornell Notes - Rationale & History Notes

Name Date Period Subject

Questions:

  • Test Questions
  • Curiosity Questions
  • Who, what, when, where, how?
  • Why, would, should, could?
  • Level one, two, and three questions (esp. level two & three)

Notes

* Cornell University - Smart students

* Students failing? Prof to study this

* Students not recording info from class - within 48 hrs. forgot 60%

* Eventually forgot the rest of it

* Recording learning - notes (in own words) - remembered 60%

* Why not more? Students must do something with notes within 24 hours -- must :

  • Revisit general ideas (summarize)
  • Think critically/creatively about ideas (questions)
  • Consider value of ideas to them personally (reflection)

* Prof created Cornell Notes with questions on left and summary/reflection on bottom to force students to do above activities

* Students using Cornell Notes who revisited notes within 24 hours and wrote questions, summary and reflection retained 90-100% of information

Summary/Reflection: Summary part should be short, including only key ideas in generalized form, in own words, 1-2 sentences long. Reflection part should be 2-3 sentences in addition to the summary. Students must reflect/consider thoughtfully/comment on/ share opinions about the content of the notes -- what they learned, their opinion, what is valuable, what the impact of the information is, etc.

Sample summary/reflection for this page of notes: Cornell students who were falling behind used a professor's new notetaking method and then remembered almost everything. This is probably a very beneficial notetaking method for me to use in every single class. I should be able to get As on the tests for sure if I use this method. Thanks Mrs. M and AVID!!
