Introduction of Course

This is a one year course introducing the basics of Spanish language and culture.  Students will be listening, speaking, reading and writing Spanish on a daily basis.  Also, elements of Hispanic culture, such as schooling, family life and leisure activities will be studied.

Course Outline

Using the textbook, Navegando, and other teacher selected materials, emphasis is placed on developing the student’s reading, writing, listening, speaking skills in Spanish.  Grammar will be introduced and practiced.  Students will be exposed to reading selections dealing with life and culture in Spanish speaking countries.  Vocabulary will be presented that will help students function on an everyday basis.  Students will practice Spanish with partners, in small groups and with the whole class.

Textbook and Other Materials

The textbook for this course is Navegando 1, augmented by teacher-selected materials. Each student will also be issued a workbook, in which he/she will be assigned homework.  If the workbook is lost, it will be the student’s responsibility to purchase a replacement from the publisher.  Each student is responsible caring for his textbook.  Lost or damaged book fines must be paid for by the student at the current cost of replacement.

Each student is required to bring his or her books and other appropriate materials to class daily.

Grading Policy

Grades will be computed on a point basis.  Tests, quizzes, classwork, and homework are given a point value based on importance.  The student’s grade will be calculated every five weeks.  The following scale will determine the grade by the percentage of  points earned:

                                                90 – 100% =  A

                                                80 – 89.9% = B

                                                70 – 79.9% = C

                                                60 -  69.9% = D

                                                0  - 59.9%   = F

Homework

Homework will be assigned regularly.  It will be collected and assigned credit points on the day it is due.  NO points will be given for INCOMPLETE or ILLEGIBLE homework.  Late homework will not be accepted except in the case of an excused absence.  It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements for makeup work immediately upon return to school from an absence.

NO MAKE-UP WILL BE ALLOWED FOR TRUANTS, CUTS OR UNCLEARED ABSENCES.

Classroom Management

NO STUDENT SHALL DISRUPT INSTRUCTION.

Consequences for disruption:

  1. conference with the teacher
  2. detention
  3. parent contact
  4. referral to office
  5. suspension

Any student involved in dishonesty on any work will be subject to one, some, or all of the following:  an automatic zero on the work; suspension from class; a referral to the administration; and a conference between an administrator, the teacher, the parents and the student.

The teacher will determine which consequences will be appropriate for the situation.

Attendance/Tardy Policy:

Attendance is important and is directly related to success.  To be successful, students must be in attendance and on time each day.  The school tardy and attendance policies will be in effect in this class.  Fifteen days of absence for any reason, except legitimate school activities, will result in a grade of fail. Students who wish to miss class due to a school activity (rally, ASB, fieldtrip, sport, etc.) must see the teacher BEFORE missing the class to get permission and receive the assignments to be made up. Students who fail to get permission BEFORE missing the class will be subject to loss of credit for that day’s work.
