Earth Science
Mr. Bost K-4
This course orientation has been prepared to communicate the expectations, course
content, course requirements, policies, and any other information that will give you the opportunity to achieve, and have a positive learning experience. Please read it carefully, learn it, and share it with your parents. If you do not understand, or you have a question about any part of this communication, please see me for clarification.
Earth Science 2B is an Earth science class aimed at the
student that has a good background in science and wants to explore how our
Earth and the planets around it work.
This class is a standard based class and will prepare each student for
the standards test in the spring. By
studying the material in this course, it is my hope that my students will
become involved citizens who understand how Earth works, and academically
competent learners who use the information taught in this class for the
improvement of their lives. The class
will engage the students in critical thinking and problem solving
techniques. Students are expected to
be prepared for class at all times.

Students will demonstrate that they are effective communicators who employ reading as a basic tool. The text is given to you so that you have the ability to read about the topic of the day ahead of time and to facilitate in class topic discussion with your fellow students and myself. In addition, a class set of books will be provided for classroom use. If books are damaged, that class set will be removed.
Your semester grade will be based on the number of points you earn on class assignments, homework assignments, group projects, labs, participation, and exams. Grades can be calculated by dividing the number of points earned by the total points possible. The following is the grading scale:
90% - 100%=A 60%-69%=D
80% - 89%=B Below 60%=F
70% - 79%=C
Students are required to keep an accurate account of all scores that have an effect on their
grade.

Tests will be given at the end of each chapter. Tests are given as a measurement tool, not only for me, but also for you, the student, to show the level of academic competence in the subject matter that has been covered. Make-up tests are given by appointment only and must be made up before the next test.
Homework is very important in this class and failure to complete your homework will make it impossible to pass. Homework allows the individual student to demonstrate that they are both productive individuals who exhibit effective time management skills, follow directions, and view integrity as a personal goal, and perceptive individuals who demonstrate critical thinking skills, access and analyze resources effectively. I will assign homework almost every day and we will discuss it the following day. The students should use the questions given for homework to determine what questions they have about the material. Students should then ask those questions of the teacher.
Students must demonstrate that they are effective communicators who respect the right of each person in the class and will listen when others are talking. Also, each person must be able to be culturally aware of the differences between his/her classmates and respect those differences. To that end the following classroom rules apply.
Students are expected to make a reasonable effort on every
assignment and to do their own work. Any
indication of cheating on a test or plagiarism of an assignment will result in
a zero grade. Some examples (not
inclusive) of violation of academic integrity are talking during an exam,
unauthorized notes, “wandering eyes”, and copying anything from a fellow student.
Your attendance is important and is directly related to your success. I want you to be successful; therefore, you need to be in class, on time, each day. If you choose not to be in class, you will be processed through the school’s attendance policy. This could result in you being dropped from my class and placed into the opportunity room.

Materials Needed for this Class
You will need to have a three-ring binder, 8.5 x 11 inch-college ruled-lined paper, black or dark blue pens, red pens, colored pencils, #2 pencils, and a calculator. Spiral notebook paper is not allowed in this class.
Teacher, parent, and student communication is an essential link in the success of any student’s education. To this end, I want to be as accessible as possible to both the students and parents. My conference period is period five. You will also be able to e-mail me through the school website at bbost@hartdistrict.org. Please complete the attached information sheet and return it by __________________.
